Are there many trucking companies that hire student graduates directly from a training school?
No. There are only a few trucking companies that hire student graduates directly from a training school.
If I graduated from a truck driver training school, do I have to go under an employment contract when I get hired by a trucking
No. That is one of the benefits of getting your CDL Class A license through a truck driver training school.
If I am not under an employment contract and I’m not happy, can I just terminate my employment?
Yes you can. But it’s not advisable. The general rule of thumb is to get a minimum of (1) year of otr driving experience before moving on. Companies that hire only experienced drivers want at least (1) year of otr driving experience, and some want more.
Do I have any other options?
Yes. You can make an ‘interim’ move to a trucking company that hires drivers at all levels of experience. You would be considered an experienced driver and can continue to earn the qualifying time until you are eligible for hire by a company that hires only experienced drivers.
What is the difference between companies that hire drivers at all levels and companies that hire only experienced drivers?
The difference is in the pay scale, home time and the types of driving jobs available to you.
How much driving experience do I need before being eligible for hire as an experienced driver?
Once you have 3 months driving experience you are eligible for hire as an experienced driver. There are companies that will hire you with 3 months driving experience, and some that will hire you with 6 months driving experience.
How long does Orientation take?
Orientation usually takes 3 days.
